Imaging Software and Graphics Editors

Imaging software has allowed amateur photographer to effectively edit and manipulate their pictures. What was once possible only for professionals in expensive, highly technical darkrooms can now be accomplished at home with a quality graphics editor.

Imaging Software Features
Although Adobe Photoshop is one of the most renowned image editing programs, not every photographer needs access to such specialized software. Many photographers use the graphics editor that comes with their
digital camera as it’s sufficient for their image editing needs. While some may seek out more advanced imaging software, even a basic graphics editor boasts some helpful tools. The following are just some of the features included in the average graphics editor.

Cropping and Resizing
All graphics editor programs come equipped with
cropping or resizing functions. In fact, these features are used more than any other imaging software tools.
Cropping allows photographers to remove unwanted areas of a photo and maintain only the section that they want to use. If a photo’s composition is slightly off, cropping can mean the difference between an average image and a great photo. In addition to rearranging the composition, cropping can help a photographer eliminate unwanted details from a photo. For example, a photographer may want to cut strangers out of the sides of his family photo at Disneyland.
Although a graphics editor generally crops photos as rectangles, some imaging software allows for cropping images in other shapes, such as circles or hearts. This type of image manipulation is especially helpful for photographers who scrapbook or make their own greeting cards.
Resizing is another helpful tool. For example, if the original photo image is too large or bulky to be used on a website or emailed, imaging software can effectively resize the image. You can then save the image as a variety of different imaging data files (i.e.
JPEG, PNG, GIF or TIFF).

Brightness and Contrast
Editing software can correct a number of problems with brightness, sharpness and contrast in dull or fuzzy pictures. In fact, an otherwise perfect photo can be easily ruined by a slight problem with lighting. Using a graphics editor allows photographers to tweak the brightness and color contrast of the photo to make it more crisp and clear.
Adding Text
Image editing software allows photographers to add text boxes, word balloons and other graphics to their photos. By allowing users to further customize their photos, graphics editing programs can help people create unique greeting cards, comic strips and other fun crafts. The uses of this accessory are limited only by your imagination!

Grayscale
Grayscale is an image-editing tool that allows users to convert color images to black and white. At any given time, you may not have black and white film on hand or you may realize that a particular picture would be better in grayscale only after having taken it. Grayscale is more appropriate, for example, in low-lighting conditions, gothic photography, wedding photography and even photojournalism. Many people convert ordinary pictures into grayscale to give them a nostalgic, classic, timeless feel. Now, image editing software makes this process much easier.

Sepia
Sepia is an antique method of film development that removed the silver from a negative to prevent the image from fading. The result of this process produced a photo that, instead of being black and white, was colored in warm brown tones. Some of the best examples of sepia in photography include portraits from the 1800s.
Most image-editing software has settings that can mimic the sepia process. Like black and white, sepia lends a timeless quality to photos and, therefore, is a popular choice for architectural and gothic photographers.

Redeye Elimination
One of the biggest irritations in photography, the
red eye is caused by the flash reflecting off people’s eyes. In pictures, it makes portrait subjects appear evil or demonic.
Imaging software often includes redeye elimination options, allowing the editor to zoom in on the subjects’ eyes and replace redeye with natural eye color.

Removing Unwanted Objects
More advanced graphic editors allow photographers to make sweeping changes to a photo. While it takes a bit more time, effort and skill, an editor using good editing software can remove objects from photos without having to crop them. The offending object is painted over in a way that does not detract from the photo nor alter the original dimensions.

Panorama Stitching
Image editing allows the manipulation of
panaromic shots, pictures of wide expanses such as landscapes, cityscapes or skies. In fact, graphics editing programs allow you to stitch together a series of sequential landscape shots to make a single, larger, more inclusive picture.

Warping
Warping is a feature usually reserved for high-end image editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop. By playing with mathematical algorithms, the graphics editor distorts and twists the pixels of an image file to create unusual effects.

Is a Graphic Editor Necessary?
While not every photographer requires imaging software, a graphic editor is a nice addition to a
photographer’s equipment. Keep in mind that the average photographer can get by with the image editing software that is packaged with most digital cameras.
Imaging software increases your ability to create unique effects in their pictures. The quality of editing software ranges from basic programs, such as Microsoft’s Paint, to high-end imaging software, like Adobe’s Photoshop. Most amateur photographers will probably be content with a mid-range graphics editor.

High Quality Editing Software
While a photographer has many different brands of image editing software to choose from, some stand out for the distinct features they offer. If you require a high-quality graphics editor, some of the leading names in the field include:
  • Adobe’s Photoshop
  • Apple’s Aperture
  • Corel Paint Shop Pro
  • Microsoft’s Digital Image Suite.
